Robbers Cut Off University Student’s Fingers, Part of Ear in Phone Theft Attack
A 200-level Biology Education student of Sa’adu Zungur University, Maryam Yakeem, was seriously injured after suspected phone snatchers attacked her in Gadau, Bauchi State, severing two fingers and part of her ear before fleeing with her phone.
The attack reportedly happened in Gadau town, outside the university campus, where witnesses said four assailants confronted the student and demanded her phone. During the robbery, one of the suspects allegedly used a knife to inflict the injuries before the group escaped.
The incident has heightened concerns among residents over violent phone theft in the area, with community members calling for stronger security patrols and swift arrests.
The Nigeria Police Force confirmed the attack. Police spokesperson SP Nafiu Habib said efforts were underway to track the suspects, recover the stolen phone and bring those responsible to justice.
The victim is receiving treatment at a health facility in Gadau and may be transferred to the Federal Medical Centre Azare for further care.
In a statement, the university said the attack did not occur on campus, pushing back against reports suggesting otherwise. The institution said the incident happened outside its premises and reaffirmed ongoing collaboration with security agencies to improve safety for students and staff.
University spokesperson Auwal Hassan said senior officials, including the Chief Security Officer and Dean of Students Affairs, visited the student in hospital and confirmed she is in stable condition.
Vice-Chancellor Fatimah Tahir expressed sympathy with the victim and said the university remains committed to the safety of its community.
