“Impeachment Process Against Fubara Is Fully on Course” — Rivers Assembly

The Rivers State House of Assembly has said impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, are progressing as required by law.

The Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, on Thursday commenced the impeachment process with the presentation of eight allegations against the governor and his deputy.

Speculation emerged on social media on Friday suggesting that the lawmakers had suspended the process. However, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Dr. Enemi Alabo George, refuted the claims, describing them as false.

In a statement, George said the impeachment exercise, initiated on January 8, 2026, remains ongoing and is being conducted in line with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). He disclosed that formal notices of alleged gross misconduct have been forwarded to both the governor and the deputy governor, and that the House is awaiting their responses.

George said the Assembly is constitutionally mandated to act where there are alleged infractions by the governor, deputy governor, or other state officials, adding that the lawmakers would not abdicate that responsibility.

He accused some individuals and media platforms of spreading misinformation to mislead the public and create disaffection between the Assembly and citizens of the state.

Calling on residents to ignore what he described as “false narratives,” George maintained that the Assembly would not be distracted or pressured into abandoning its constitutional duties.

He expressed appreciation to the people of Rivers State and other stakeholders for their support, reaffirming the Assembly’s commitment to democratic governance and the rule of law.
