Igbinedion Resigns from PDP, Citing Lack of Indigenous Party Members on Edo Gubernatorial Ticket, Set to Join APC
As Edo State approaches its governorship election on September 21, Hon. Omosede Igbinedion, former federal lawmaker and daughter of Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Igbinedion, who previously represented the Ovia Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, submitted her resignation letter on August 11, 2024.
In her resignation, addressed to Mr. Lucky Edosomwan, PDP Chairman for Okada West Ward 1, Igbinedion also notified key party officials, including the local and state party chairmen, as well as the national leadership. Her decision follows her dissatisfaction with the party’s internal processes, citing issues of equity, fairness, and the marginalization of long-standing members.
Igbinedion, who served as a PDP representative from 2015 to 2019, expressed frustration over the perceived lack of fairness within the party. She highlighted the absence of indigenous PDP candidates in the gubernatorial race as a key factor in her departure, emphasizing her commitment to the people of Ovia over party loyalty.
Reports indicate that Igbinedion is poised to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), with her defection expected to be announced at the Edo South Senatorial governorship campaign rally on August 13, 2024, at the Ekehuan campus of the University of Benin (UNIBEN).
