How Strange Woman Stole Newborn from Mother at Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital, Lafia
In a shocking incident at Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital in Lafia, Nasarawa State, a yet-to-be-identified woman cunningly abducted a one-day-old baby from the postnatal ward on Tuesday. The distraught mother, Wosilat Suleiman, had just undergone a Caesarean Section to deliver a baby boy.
The mysterious woman, posing as a helpful acquaintance, vanished with the newborn after offering assistance to bathe him, leaving the mother in despair.
“My relation introduced the strange woman in the ward, assuring me she would care for me and the baby while she stepped out momentarily. The woman volunteered to bathe the baby and disappeared with him,” lamented Wosilat.
Desperate for assistance, Wosilat pleaded with authorities to locate her missing baby, still grappling with the physical and emotional toll of childbirth.
Reacting to the incident, the hospital management expressed regret over the breach of security measures despite the facility’s stringent protocols for patient and staff safety.
Dr. Mohammed Salihu, the hospital’s Acting Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, revealed that this was the first such theft in the hospital’s history. The baby was handed over to a relative after delivery, who entrusted a stranger to care for the mother and child while she briefly left the premises.
The hospital management promptly reported the matter to the police, initiating an ongoing investigation. Salihu assured that the CCTV footage would be reviewed to identify and apprehend the perpetrator. Additionally, the relative of the baby’s mother has been taken into custody, and hospital staff on duty are being questioned by the police.
