How Anambra Can Tackle Insecurity – Ngige
Former Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chris Ngige, has emphasized the need for a multifaceted approach to address the growing insecurity in the state, calling on the government to “compete with bad actors” by offering hope and opportunities to young people. Ngige shared his perspective over the weekend when he was honored with the High Chieftaincy title, Otiwaluzo N’Nnewi (Trailblazer in Road Construction), by the Nnewi community.
The title was conferred by the Nnewi monarch, Igwe Kenneth Onyeneke Orizu III, during the 2024 Ofala Cultural Festival held at his palace. The monarch praised Ngige for his transformative leadership, particularly in road construction and other developmental projects during his 34-month tenure as governor of Anambra State.
Speaking on the state’s security challenges, Ngige advocated for a combination of kinetic and non-kinetic strategies. He highlighted the importance of investing in security agencies, providing them with the necessary resources such as equipment, communication tools, and logistics to combat criminal activities effectively. However, he stressed that addressing insecurity also requires engaging young people in meaningful ways to deter them from being influenced by non-state actors.
“The government must compete with bad actors in recruiting and empowering young men,” Ngige said. Reflecting on his time as governor, he shared how his administration offered jobs to individuals willing to work, paying them N30,000 monthly—an amount considered substantial at the time. “For those unwilling to reform, we addressed them kinetically,” he added.
Ngige’s tenure as governor was marked by significant achievements in infrastructure development. Recalling his contributions, he mentioned the construction of the Adazi-Nnewi-Ihembosi-Ozubulu-Okija road, which had been impassable, and his efforts to tackle erosion challenges and build critical infrastructure such as the hanging bridge at Mmili Ele in Nnewi.
Igwe Orizu lauded Ngige’s leadership and dedication to the development of Anambra State. “Ngige is an illustrious son of Anambra. His efforts in public service, especially in road construction, have left an indelible mark on Nnewi,” the monarch said.
In his remarks, Ngige expressed gratitude for the recognition and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance the security and welfare of Anambra State and its people. He urged for collective efforts to address insecurity, emphasizing the importance of balancing enforcement with opportunities that inspire hope and Progress.
