Man accused of stealing employer’s boxers dies after fall from four-storey building in Anambra

A middle-aged man identified as Emeka has died after an incident at a four-storey property on Afubera Street, Odoakpu in Onitsha.

The incident occurred around 3 a.m. on Friday, March 27, 2026. Emeka, who was said to work as a site supervisor at the building—also used for textile production—was allegedly accused of stealing boxer shorts belonging to his employer.

According to accounts from residents, tensions escalated after the allegation. He was reportedly assaulted and confined for several days inside the premises before the fatal incident.

A neighbour who spoke anonymously said workers at the facility raised alarm in the early hours after hearing a loud cry. Emeka’s body was later found on the ground floor of the building, with indications suggesting he may have fallen or been pushed from an upper level.

Security operatives later arrived at the scene, evacuated the body, and took several individuals connected to the facility into custody.

The spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and said multiple versions of events are being reviewed as part of ongoing investigations.

According to him, some accounts suggest the victim was assaulted and held against his will before his death, while others claim he attempted to escape from confinement and fell from the building.

He added that suspects are in custody and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death. Investigations are continuing.

Anambra State police authorities say further findings will guide next steps in the case.
