Hookup Culture Linked to High Rate of Missing Girls, Says Ogun Police

The Ogun State Police Command has identified the prevalence of hookup culture as a significant factor contributing to the alarming rate of missing girls and ritual killings involving females in the state.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Omolola Odutola, hookup culture—a slang term describing brief, casual, and often transactional sexual encounters—has become a dangerous trend, particularly among young girls. Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Wednesday, Odutola expressed concern over the link between this practice and the rising number of cases involving missing girls and ritual killings.

“Today, we have lots of reports of missing persons. By the time we start an investigation, not less than 10 young girls and ladies go missing daily,” she stated. Odutola explained that police investigations often reveal that many of these cases are connected to hookup platforms, where victims are lured by strangers to unknown locations. Tragically, some end up being used for ritual purposes.

The PPRO highlighted Ogun State’s troubling history with such incidents. In October, the state police reported the case of Testimony John, an 18-year-old girl who disappeared after being sent to Saabo Market in Sagamu. Similarly, in September, the brutal murder of 17-year-old Habibat Akinsanya, a secondary school student, prompted a police manhunt for her killers after she was abducted and killed.
