Gunmen Riddle Abia Commissioner’s Car with Bullets in Shocking Assassination Attempt

The Commissioner for Lands and Housing in Abia State, Chaka Chukwumerije, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt over the weekend when gunmen reportedly opened fire on his vehicle along the Okigwe axis of the Enugu-Umuahia-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway.

Sources close to the Commissioner said he was en route to Umuahia, the state capital, when a suspicious vehicle that had been trailing them suddenly opened fire. Despite a hail of bullets, Chukwumerije and three others in the car emerged unhurt. The vehicle, however, sustained significant damage and was riddled with bullet holes.

His brother, Dike Chukwumerije, shared details of the ordeal, describing it as a clear and targeted attempt on the Commissioner’s life. He emphasized Chaka’s dedication to public service and his steadfast commitment to Governor Alex Otti’s reform agenda for Abia State. “Chaka has buried himself in his work. He’s been selfless, focused, and fully aligned with the reform-driven government of Alex Otti,” Dike said, lamenting that those who are most committed to positive change often face the greatest threats.

The family expressed deep gratitude for Chaka’s survival, attributing it to divine protection. They reaffirmed their commitment to serve Abia State with integrity and resilience despite the risks.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, said she would respond to inquiries about the incident. However, a source within the command disclosed that the attack did not occur within the jurisdiction of the Abia State Police Command.
