Gunfire in Aguata: Police-Led Team Storms Hideout, Rescues Kidnap Victim, Kills Suspect in 40-Minute Shootout

 

Gunshots shattered the stillness of the night in Amaokpala, Aguata Local Government Area, as a police-led joint security team engaged a gang of armed hoodlums in a fierce 40-minute gun battle that ended with the rescue of a kidnapped woman, the death of one suspect, and the recovery of weapons and incriminating items.

 

According to a press release issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, *SP Tochukwu Ikenga*, on Sunday, 13th July 2025, the incident occurred during a late-night patrol on Saturday by operatives from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Aguata.

 

The statement revealed that the patrol team encountered armed criminals who opened fire on sighting the security operatives. The officers swiftly returned fire, engaging the attackers in a prolonged exchange that ultimately overpowered the hoodlums.

 

“During the gun duel, one of the suspects was neutralized and later confirmed dead at a nearby hospital, where his body was deposited for preservation,” the statement read. “Most notably, a 26-year-old female victim held hostage by the gang was successfully rescued, provided medical attention, and debriefed by our team ahead of her safe reunion with family.”

 

The operation also led to the recovery of various items, including:

 

* One pump-action shotgun

* Eleven live cartridges

* An ash-coloured Toyota Camry (Reg. No: Lagos-EPE-208-FK)

* A police belt

* One carton of Chelsea sachet alcoholic drink

* One Zenith Bank ATM card

* One axe

* A small Tecno mobile phone

* A packet of cigarettes

* Assorted charms

* ₦2,700 in cash

 

The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State, *CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc MNIPS PhD*, praised the courage and tactical precision of the operatives, reaffirming the Command’s determination to keep Anambra safe.

 

“Our officers remain resolute in the fight against all forms of criminality. This operation demonstrates that there will be no hiding place for those who threaten peace and security in our communities,” CP Orutugu stated.

 

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities as the Command intensifies efforts to dismantle criminal networks across the state.
