Gov Makinde Takes Firm Stance: Closes Down Alleged Illegal Mining Operation, Apprehends Four Individuals

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State ordered the immediate shutdown of a facility suspected of illegal mining activities. The operation, which involved processing and packaging lithium, was uncovered during an unscheduled inspection by the governor at the factory site located in Idi Ayunre, Oluyole Local Government Area, Ibadan.

Governor Makinde’s chief press secretary, Sulaimon Olarewaju, revealed that the facility, initially intended for recycling batteries and tires, had been repurposed without proper authorization. The governor also directed the arrest of four individuals associated with the alleged illegal mining operation, emphasizing that they had operated without the required license from the government.

During the inspection, Governor Makinde disclosed that preliminary investigations indicated the involvement of Chinese nationals in the operation. Despite a federal government-issued operational license, Makinde expressed concerns about security threats arising when states are not actively involved in the mining license approval process.

Citing a violation of Executive Order 001 of 2024 on the safe handling of harmful substances, the governor asserted that the arrested individuals would face prosecution. Furthermore, Governor Makinde announced the state’s intention to take legal action to assume control of the illegal facility until a thorough investigation is conducted.

In related news, the governor highlighted the importance of states having a role in the issuance of mining licenses to address potential security issues and maintain regulatory control.
