Atiku Challenges Tinubu to Prioritize Leadership Sacrifices in Recovering Nigeria’s Economy
In a scathing critique, Atiku Abubakar, the People Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the 2023 general election, has squarely placed the blame for Nigeria’s economic hardships on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In a statement posted on his official X account on Sunday, Atiku urged Tinubu to take a page from Argentina’s President Javier Milei in swiftly restoring investor confidence amid a challenging economic landscape.
Atiku lambasted Tinubu, asserting that Nigeria’s current predicament is a result of the former president’s actions or lack thereof. He dismissed Tinubu’s attempts to shift blame onto the opposition and his predecessor as “needless and myopic,” emphasizing that market forces respond to tangible actions.
Drawing a sharp contrast with Argentina’s President Milei, Atiku highlighted the hasty and ad hoc nature of the reforms implemented by the Tinubu administration. He praised Milei for strategically sequencing reforms and being prepared for the inevitable shocks that follow. Atiku also commended Milei’s personal sacrifices and cited Argentina’s lean government model, which sharply contrasts with the expansion of ministries and spending on renovations by Tinubu in Nigeria.
Atiku expressed a keen interest in sharing details of his “Recover Nigeria Plan,” drawing parallels with President Milei’s stabilization plan. He underscored the need for clear-cut policies and leadership-led sacrifices to rejuvenate the economy, warning against discontentment and potential protests, especially among the youth.
As economic woes deepen for Nigerians, recent data from the National Bureau of Statistics reveals a headline inflation rate of 29.90% and food inflation at 35.42% in January 2024. Atiku’s criticism comes at a crucial time, urging a strategic approach to address the challenges faced by the nation’s citizens.
