Funso Doherty Resigns from ADC, Joins PDP

Funso Doherty, the former governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) in Lagos, has officially joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Doherty announced his move in a statement released on Monday, highlighting his intention to forge a united front to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos.

“After extensive consultations, it is with humility and great expectations for Lagos State’s future that I announce that I have joined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP),” Doherty’s statement read. He emphasized the need for a robust and credible alternative to what he described as the exclusionary and extractive governance model that has prevailed in Lagos since 1999.

Doherty pointed out the persistent lack of fundamental services in Lagos despite significant expenditures. “Despite trillions of Naira spent over a generation, Lagos State still lacks fundamental services: public water supply, reliable and affordable power, quality public education and healthcare, mass housing, robust mass transit, and basic public law and order,” he noted. He also raised concerns about the government’s handling of climate risks like flooding.

Doherty expressed his belief that the PDP, with its national presence and institutional structure, offers the best platform to challenge the current leadership in Lagos. He called for a movement towards effective, inclusive, and accountable governance.

“This decision was made after extensive consultations and consideration of your views,” he stated, expressing gratitude to those who provided comments and advice. He acknowledged the challenges ahead, including intra-party differences that must be navigated and managed, and committed to working collaboratively to find solutions.

Doherty concluded with an invitation for broad-based support: “I invite you to join us in creating a new era of inclusive governance and broad-based, people-driven prosperity in Lagos State.”
