Fresh Crisis Looms in Labour Party as NWC Opposes Governor Otti’s Leadership Dissolution Attempt

A new crisis appears to be unfolding within the Labour Party (LP) as the National Working Committee (NWC) pushes back against Abia State Governor Alex Otti’s recent bid to dissolve the party’s leadership.

Governor Otti had recently informed the party’s national chairman, Julius Abure, of his intent to convene a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Saturday, August 31, to dissolve the current leadership, arguing that their tenure had long expired.

However, this move has been met with strong opposition from the NWC. In a meeting led by Abure on Tuesday, the committee countered Otti’s attempt, asserting that there is no “vacuum in the leadership of our Party.”

According to the NWC, the tenure of the current executives is set to expire in June 2024, and a National Convention was held on March 27, 2024, to address this timeline. The committee further questioned why Governor Otti, whose deputy had represented him at the convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State, is still seeking to dissolve the leadership.

In an official statement, the NWC emphasized that the Labour Party is fundamentally different from other political parties, stating, “The Labour Party is not controlled by one individual; it is a party for the people. This inclusivity is what enabled the party to achieve significant success in the 2023 general election.”

The statement also highlighted Governor Otti’s own political journey, noting that his success in the 2023 elections was made possible by the party’s principles and ideals. The NWC underscored the importance of maintaining these values to preserve the party’s integrity and future successes.
