Enugu Police Nab Notorious Gang Leader Chukwuka Nwatu, Seize AK-47, Ammunition
The Enugu State Police Command has arrested Chukwuka Nwatu, a notorious criminal alleged to have terrorized the Oruku community in Nkanu East Local Government Area. Nwatu, whose criminal activities reportedly included arson, had been previously arrested and released, only to continue his illicit operations.
Local sources claim that Nwatu has been involved in a series of violent acts, including burning the homes of his opponents. His latest arrest took place on Monday after he and his gang allegedly attacked the neighbouring Aguikpa Autonomous community in a dispute over the destruction of a shrine located on land Nwatu claimed to own.
According to a source, Nwatu had been employed as part of a security team by the caretaker committee chairman of Oruku, who also works as a native doctor. The conflict escalated when Nwatu’s group attempted to retaliate against Aguikpa youths for damaging the shrine. However, the Aguikpa community overpowered the attackers, disarmed them, and called in the police.
During the arrest, police reportedly recovered AK-47 ammunition from a bag found at Nwatu’s Point of Sale (POS) business. Efforts to obtain an official statement from the Enugu State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, did not respond to calls or messages.
