Enugu Police Arrest 38 Suspects Over Killing of Catholic Priest
The Enugu State Police Command has announced the arrest of 38 suspects in connection with the killing of Catholic priest, Reverend Father Matthew Eya. The parish priest of Saint Charles Catholic Church, Eha-Ndiagu, was shot dead by gunmen on Friday evening along the Eha-Alumonah–Eha-Ndiagu Road in Nsukka Local Government Area while returning from Enugu Urban.
Police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe confirmed the arrests in a statement issued on Sunday. He said Commissioner of Police Bitrus Giwa had earlier directed the Udenu Area Commander and tactical units to launch a manhunt for the assailants. According to him, the suspects were apprehended through bush combing operations and raids on black spots in the area, with incriminating items recovered. The individuals are currently undergoing screening.
Father Eya’s killing has drawn widespread outrage. The Enugu State Government on Saturday announced a ₦10 million bounty for information leading to the arrest of his killers. The late cleric, a member of the Nsukka Catholic Diocese, was described as a dedicated priest committed to his pastoral work.
Commissioner Giwa has expressed condolences to the family of the slain priest and the Catholic Church, reaffirming the police command’s determination to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
