Gunmen Attack DIG Frank Mbah’s Enugu Residence, Kill Police Officer on Duty
Gunmen on Thursday evening launched an attack on the country home of Deputy Inspector General of Police Frank Mbah in Ezimo community, Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, killing a police officer stationed as his guard.
The assailants, suspected to be herdsmen, struck around 7 pm and attempted to gain access to the residence. According to community sources, the attackers shot the officer after he raised an alarm and seized his rifle before fleeing into the surrounding bush.
Residents told reporters that the incident may be connected to recent criminal activities in the area. They alleged that the same group could be responsible for the killing of Catholic priest Rev. Fr. Mathew Eya on Friday evening in nearby Eha-Ndiagu, Nsukka Local Government Area.
“There have been constant kidnapping activities around that axis. On two occasions, people were abducted less than 500 metres from DIG Mbah’s house,” a source said. “The gunmen had never killed anyone until now, but maybe it was because the policeman challenged them.”
Community members also expressed frustration over what they described as weak security measures despite repeated sightings of suspected marauders by local workers. One source claimed other officers posted to the residence were absent during the attack.
Following the incident, police reportedly arrested a local man found intoxicated in the area, though residents insist he was not involved in the crime. “Nobody from Ezimo community will nurse evil against Frank Mbah. He is our pride,” another source stressed.
The attack has heightened fear in Ezimo and neighbouring communities, with many residents worried about a surge in kidnapping and violent crime. Efforts to reach Enugu State Police spokesperson SP Daniel Ndukwe for comment were unsuccessful as calls and messages were not returned.
