Edugate: EFCC Grills Top Ministry Officials as ICPC Recovers N50bn
The ongoing investigation into alleged financial misconduct at the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation reached a new level as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) intensified its questioning of top officials. Simultaneously, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) successfully recovered a staggering N50 billion linked to the ministry.
The recovered funds, initially intended for vulnerable citizens during the tenure of former Minister Sadiya Umar-Farouq, were reportedly on the brink of embezzlement. The ICPC, under its former Chairman Bolaji Owasanoye, intercepted the funds between July and August 2023, preventing their transfer into private bank accounts.
Sources reveal that the recovered sum was subsequently handed over to President Bola Tinubu’s Federal Government. Upon appointing the now-suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Betta Edu, President Tinubu ordered the refunded N50 billion to be redirected as part of the Infrastructure Support Fund for the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, aiming to alleviate the impact of fuel subsidy removal.
The investigation also involved the questioning of senior civil servants, including the suspended Minister Betta Edu, former Minister Sadiya Umar-Farouq, and Halima Shehu, the suspended National Coordinator and CEO of the National Social Investment Programme.
Edu faces scrutiny for authorizing the transfer of N585 million into a private account, while Umar-Farouq is under investigation for alleged N37 billion money laundering. Shehu is being questioned for allegedly moving N44 billion from the NSIP funds into private and corporate accounts without presidential approval.
EFCC sources indicate cooperation from the individuals being investigated, while the call to broaden the probe to other ministries, departments, and agencies gains momentum from political parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party and Labour Party.
As the scandal unfolds, experts suggest a comprehensive investigation into all ministries to expose potential corruption and bring accountability to civil service systems. The interim management of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation is now under the leadership of the Permanent Secretary, Abel Enitan, following the suspension of Minister Betta Edu. The unfolding events shed light on institutional failures and call for increased transparency and scrutiny in government procedures.
