Deadly Ambush: Gunmen Kill DSS Operative, Injure Police Officers in Attack on FUTO CMD’s Convoy

A personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS), attached to the Chief Medical Director of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), was shot and killed on Saturday by gunmen along the Okigwe-Umuna stretch of the Owerri-Okigwe highway in Imo State. The attack, which targeted the convoy of Dr. Kingsley Achigbu, FUTO’s Chief Medical Director, left three police officers injured.

According to a reliable family source, the family was returning from Enugu when they ran into an ambush set by armed assailants. The gunmen opened fire, riddling the convoy’s Hilux vehicle with bullets and flattening its tyres. In the chaos, the occupants—some already injured—fled into nearby bushes to escape the onslaught.

One of the injured officers was rushed into emergency surgery shortly after the incident. The attackers, unable to capture the vehicle carrying Dr. Achigbu’s family, returned to the scene and set the Hilux ablaze.

The driver of the vehicle, identified only as Austine, was initially missing but has since rejoined the family safely. All the security personnel reportedly managed to escape the ambush with their rifles.

Following the attack, reinforcements from security agencies were deployed to the scene. The injured officers were located and taken to the hospital for treatment. As of the time of this report, there has been no official statement from the police, DSS, or FUTO management regarding the incident.
