Cultural Triumph: UNESCO Adds Sango Festival to World Heritage List

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has officially added the Sango Oyo Festival to its prestigious World Heritage list. The recognition was granted during the 18th session of the 2023 Intergovernmental Committee Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Dr. Wasiu Olatubosun, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism in Oyo State, Nigeria, expressed his delight at the news, emphasizing that this accomplishment solidifies Oyo State’s position as a global tourism powerhouse. The UNESCO inscription is seen as a testament to the cultural richness and significance of the Sango Festival.

Anticipating the positive impact, Dr. Olatubosun shared insights into the potential benefits for Oyo State. He stated, “This recognition is a beacon of expansion in the economic sector of the state, as well as unprecedented growth in the hospitality business, with the astronomical influx of tourists expected during the next Sango Festival in Oyo Town in August 2024.”

The Commissioner foresees over two thousand international tourists attending the upcoming Sango Festival, marking a substantial increase in global visibility for Oyo State. This recognition not only celebrates cultural heritage but also positions the region as a key player in the international tourism industry.
