Bandits Relocating to Oyo Due to Northwest Military Pressure, Governor Makinde Warns
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has raised an alarm over the influx of bandits fleeing military operations in the Northwest into the state. Speaking during the 2025 annual inter-faith service for workers held in Ibadan, the governor vowed to root out the fleeing criminals and ensure the safety of Oyo residents.
Makinde attributed the relocation of the bandits to intensified military actions in the Northwest, which have forced them to seek new hideouts. Reflecting on the past year, he described 2024 as challenging in terms of security, citing incidents of fire outbreaks, armed robberies, and kidnappings. However, he assured the public of renewed efforts to tackle these issues in 2025.
“During a security briefing this morning, I was informed that some bad elements from the Northwest are relocating here due to the military pressure in their zones. But let me be clear—we will find and deal with them,” Makinde said. He also recounted a personal encounter during his recent birthday retreat, when bandits were discovered camping less than two kilometers away, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
The governor urged traditional rulers and residents to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activity to security operatives. “This is no joke,” Makinde stressed. “To our traditional rulers and residents, if you see suspicious movements, report them immediately. Bandits will have no foothold in Oyo. I will not rest until every inch of this state is safe.”
Makinde reassured citizens of his administration’s commitment to their safety, emphasizing that coordinated action and vigilance are key to overcoming the security challenges facing the state.
