Chief of Defence Staff Musa Confirms Arrests in Plateau State Massacre Case, Manhunt Ongoing for Remaining Suspects
In a recent update, Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Christopher Musa, has confirmed that the Nigerian military has successfully apprehended several suspects linked to the tragic Christmas Eve massacre in Plateau State. The incident, which claimed the lives of over 200 Nigerians across two Local Government Areas, prompted a swift response from the military in collaboration with state governments.
During a televised appearance on Channels TV on Monday, Gen Musa highlighted the ongoing efforts to reclaim communities seized by terrorists nationwide. He expressed determination, stating, “We are working with the state governments to identify these areas; this year, God willing, we will make sure bandits hold no community.”
Anticipating a reduction in internally displaced camps, Gen Musa emphasized that once the communities are recovered, displaced individuals can freely return to their homes. He stated, “Members of the community will be able to leave the IDP camps and be able to go there.”
Reflecting on the tragic events of Christmas Eve, Gen Musa condemned the attack as a deliberate attempt to “embarrass” the nation and undermine the government’s credibility. He assured the public that arrests are underway, acknowledging the challenges faced in responding to incidents in expansive areas.
Addressing concerns about the military’s delayed response, Gen Musa explained, “We cannot be everywhere,” emphasizing the vastness of the affected region. However, he also pointed out that the root of the ongoing insecurity lies in a lack of political will at various government levels.
Attributing the unresolved security issues to political challenges, Gen Musa stressed the need for collaborative decision-making. He asserted, “The military can only do so much; it is a political decision, not a military decision on what is to be done.”
As the investigation continues and efforts to enhance national security intensify, the Nigerian people await further updates on the measures being taken to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent future atrocities.
