Defence Minister Speaks on Arrested Officers in Alleged Coup Plot

Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, has commented on the recent arrests of military personnel linked to an alleged coup attempt, stressing that those involved understand the consequences of their actions.

In an interview with TRT World, Musa confirmed that the government is providing support for the families of the accused while the judicial process unfolds. He highlighted that the suspects would face court-martial proceedings that are “free and fair” and that all defendants would have access to legal representation.

“The perpetrators already know the repercussion of their action, and I’m sure they are ready to face the consequences,” Musa said, adding that their families are being looked after during this period.

The arrests date back to October 2025, with official confirmation of the alleged plot coming on 26 January 2026. Defence Headquarters (DHQ) initially cited “acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations” as the basis for investigation.

A special panel later reviewed the cases and identified officers whose conduct was inconsistent with the standards expected of the Nigerian Armed Forces. The report was submitted to President Bola Tinubu, and those indicted will be tried by the appropriate military judicial panels.

Security sources reiterated that while accountability will follow through the legal system, the welfare of the accused officers’ families remains a priority for the government.
