Plateau Tragedy: Survivors Recount Harrowing Ordeal – Feigned Death to Escape Brutal Attacks
In a horrifying spree of violence spanning from December 23rd to 25th, more than 30 communities across Bokkos, Mangu, and Barkin Ladi local government areas in Plateau State were mercilessly attacked. The aftermath revealed a grim toll – almost 200 lives lost, over 1,000 homes burnt, and 88 individuals injured in Bokkos alone.
Survivors from the affected communities, including Mutfet, Ndun, Sanyan, Kyong, Kop Mandarken, and others, recounted harrowing experiences. Mrs. Uren Matthew, who lost her son, described how they pretended to be dead to escape the assailants. Another survivor, Mercy Makut, spoke of witnessing the ruthless attacks while trying to protect her two-month-old baby.
Evangelist John Mahan from Mabor narrated the tragic loss of a close friend and more than 20 church members during what was supposed to be a Christmas Eve vigil. The survivors, now predominantly in Wards 5 and 8 of the Jos University Teaching Hospital, shared their tales of horror and resilience.
Despite promises from government representatives, including a visit from Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, survivors express skepticism about the efficacy of such assurances. The Vice President, alongside National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and Chief of Defense Staff General Christopher Musa, pledged that the Federal Government would ensure justice for the victims.
President Tinubu, deeply shaken by the incident, vowed not to let inter-community violence persist. Senator Shettima emphasized the commitment to bringing perpetrators to justice and preventing the recurrence of such heinous acts. Governor Caleb Mutfwang echoed this determination, promising an end to the cycle of violence.
As the affected communities bury their dead and grapple with the aftermath, the plea from survivors and citizens is clear: actions must follow words, and promises must translate into tangible solutions. The people are united in their call for collaboration between federal, state, and local governments to ensure the safety and justice they so desperately seek.
