Fresh Plateau Massacre: Assailants Leave 30 Dead, Including Women and Children
Assailants struck Kwahaslalek village in the Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, leaving a devastating toll of 30 lives, with a majority being children and women. The attack unfolded on Tuesday night, targeting residents who had gathered at a compound to adhere to the government-imposed curfew.
Joseph Gwankat, President of the Mwaghavul Development Association, revealed the grim details, emphasizing that houses and property were also destroyed during the assault. The tragedy didn’t confine itself to Kwahaslalek alone; neighboring communities, Kinat and Mairana, situated on the borders of Mangu and Barkin Ladi local government areas, also fell victim to attacks on the same fateful night.
Sources indicate that beyond Sabon-Gari and Mangu, the assailants spread terror across additional communities. The police in the state have acknowledged the attack on Kwahaslalek village, along with the burning of the market and worship centers in Mangu town.
DSP Alfred Alabo, a police spokesperson, conveyed that investigations were ongoing, and the authorities were yet to determine the precise casualty figures and extent of destruction. Despite the tragic circumstances, he assured the people of Plateau State of their safety, noting that normalcy was gradually being restored to Mangu through the deployment of security personnel and a surveillance helicopter.
Meanwhile, the government’s 24-hour curfew remains in effect for Mangu Local Government Area, underscoring the severity of the situation and the ongoing efforts to maintain public safety.
