Plateau State Crisis: Survivor Recounts Horrific Ordeal as Neighbours Burn Houses

Manji Le’an, a survivor of the recent attacks in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, recounted the harrowing experience of witnessing his uncle’s house being set ablaze by neighbours during Wednesday’s violence that claimed over 30 lives.

Le’an, who had previously relocated from Dungwel community due to security concerns, expressed shock at the aggression of his Muslim neighbours, stating, “We managed to escape unhurt but we heard and saw them rejoicing that we had been burnt in the house.”

The violence, which reportedly began as a result of clashes between Fulani herders and Mwaghavul youths, escalated to the burning of houses, including a COCIN Church at Sabon Kaswa. Le’an further described the attackers breaking windows and throwing items on their house before setting it on fire.

In response to the incidents, the police reported the arrest of nine suspects connected to the attacks. The Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Zone 4, Ebong Eyibio, assured that additional security personnel had been deployed to restore normalcy.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang condemned the security breach and urged security agencies to intensify efforts. In a statement, Mutfwang expressed condolences to the affected communities and emphasized the state government’s commitment to ensuring citizens’ security.

Despite efforts to contain the situation, reports emerged of security personnel allegedly shooting and killing a woman, Rejoice Puttu, at Kerang community. The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) responded to accusations of collaboration in a viral video, stating that the military remains neutral and committed to protecting citizens.

As tension rises, the Ngwang Ishi O’Tarok (NIO) called for calm, following the burning of a Tarok family in Mangu. The NIO assured the Tarok Nation that investigations were underway, urging against retaliatory actions.

The House of Representatives Speaker, Dr Tajudeen Abbas, expressed dismay over the renewed attacks and pledged to meet with President Bola Tinubu, vowing that the House would take a strong position upon resumption to address the escalating security challenges in Plateau State and beyond.
