Chaos Unfolds as Enugu Airport Fence Demolished by Alleged Thugs with Police Assistance

Panic gripped the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu on Friday as a group of thugs, allegedly aided by police, demolished a significant section of the airport’s perimeter fence. The incident raised concerns among nearby residents and airport staff, prompting a swift response from the Nigerian Air Force, leading to the arrest of some perpetrators.

This isn’t the first time the Akanu Ibiam International Airport has faced such an attack. In August 2020, a similar act drew strong condemnation from the then aviation minister, Hadi Sirika, and Enugu Governor Rt Hon Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. The main culprit back then, Arch. John J. Emejulu, is again accused of orchestrating the recent attack.

Eyewitnesses, including Mr. Mark Benson, a security guard at Oriental Estate, reported armed men and thugs entering through the estate gate, allegedly accompanied by the police. The swift response from airport authorities led to the arrest of one assailant.

Aviation Minister Mr. Festus Keyamo expressed displeasure over the incident and has initiated efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice, vowing to prevent any recurrence. Enugu Airport Manager, Mr. Hillary Umunna, visited the scene in the company of aviation workers, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

Residents in the vicinity, such as Barr Vincent Egechukwu Obetta and Engineer Chris Aniemeje, condemned the attack as unacceptable and called for decisive action against Emejulu. They highlighted the ongoing legal dispute over the airport land and criticized the alleged involvement of police in aiding illegality.

Ongoing concerns were voiced by Oriental Estate Chairman, Engineer Chris Aniemeje, and other residents, citing vulnerability to attacks and urging government intervention. The Enugu State government expressed sadness over the incident and pledged to hold the perpetrators accountable.

Despite attempts to obtain reactions from the Enugu State Police Command and Arch. John J. Emejulu, there has been no response. Questions remain about Emejulu’s status, but sources suggest he was transferred to the State CID, leaving the community on edge about potential future incidents.
