Bayelsa Guber Poll: House Speaker, Isenah to Vacate Office

The Speaker of Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Tonye Isenah will on Monday vacate his position following pressures from leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state ahead of November 16 gubernatorial election.

Isenah representing Kolokuma/Opokuma Constituency 1, according to sources will formally announce his resignation when the House convenes on Monday. The Speaker who was elected on June 6, 2019 is resigning to pave way for another member, Monday Obolo from Southern Ijaw local government area to occupy the position.

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), David Lyon hails from Southern Ijaw and ceding the speakership position to the local government according to permutations will help the PDP garner votes to defeat the APC candidate in the area.

Isenah was said to have addressed his staff on Friday after the day’s plenary in what is believed to be a valedictory session ahead of Monday’s resignation. The Speaker, who initially vowed not to resign, sources said he changed his mind as not to take the blame should the PDP fails to win the gubernatorial election.
