Bandits Overpower Hunters: Death Toll Reaches 18 in Taraba Ambush

In a devastating turn of events, bandits have mercilessly taken the lives of 18 hunters in separate attacks within the Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State.

Reports from Daily Trust indicate that a harrowing confrontation unfolded on Tuesday when 15 hunters faced off against a marauding group of over 200 bandits near Maihula town, situated in a mountainous region. Tragically, the bandits wielded more advanced weaponry, resulting in the fatal outcome for the courageous hunters.

The situation escalated as the bandits, intent on attacking Bali town, the headquarters of Bali Local Government, and neighboring villages, were met with fierce resistance from the hunters. Regrettably, 14 hunters lost their lives during the initial confrontation, with several others sustaining injuries. One additional hunter succumbed to injuries while en route to Jalingo Hospital, bringing the total casualties to 15.

Adamu Dantala, the Taraba State Chairman of the Hunters Association, spoke to Daily Trust, confirming the grim toll of the encounter. He revealed that an additional three hunters were ambushed and killed by bandits near Dakka town in Bali Local Government Area.

Expressing the urgent need for support, Dantala emphasized the lack of financial aid for the families of the deceased hunters or for the treatment of the injured. “We need government and community support to fully arm us, the hunters,” he stressed.

The Kur Bali Chiefdom, under the leadership of Alhaji Mahamud Abubakar, bore witness to the bandits’ invasion, thwarted only by the valiant hunters. The chiefdom mourns the loss of 15 brave souls who paid the ultimate price in defense of their community.

Despite attempts to obtain official statements, the Police spokesman, SP Usman Abdullah, remained unreachable, failing to respond to calls or messages from Daily Trust regarding these tragic incidents. The community now grapples with grief and the pressing need for enhanced support to fortify their defenders against such brazen attacks.
