The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested a suspect, Ismail Tunji Ibiyeye, in connection with the alleged murder of a 42-year-old trader, Olaitan Amere, in Ido-Ekiti.
Amere, a mother of three, was found dead in her home in the Ajegunle area of Ido-Ekiti after she was reportedly attacked with machetes.
According to a relative, Dare Akinola, there was an earlier attempt to set her house on fire a day before the fatal attack. He said a passerby noticed flames coming from a window and raised the alarm, preventing the fire from spreading.
The attack reportedly occurred at about 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2026. Family members alleged that the assailants inflicted multiple machete wounds on the victim's head, face, legs and other parts of her body.
They further claimed that after the attack, the suspects attempted to burn the body by covering it with clothes and other household items before leaving a container of petrol at the scene.
The deceased's elder sister, Funmilola Adewumi, said the family became concerned after repeated attempts to reach Amere by phone failed. They later went to her residence, where they discovered her body in a pool of blood.
Adewumi also alleged that the victim had received threats before the incident.
Police confirmed that the suspect is in custody at the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) office in Ado-Ekiti.
Ibiyeye, who was reportedly in a relationship with the deceased, is said to be an environmental staff member at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti, and a native of Ofa in Kwara State.
The police said the suspect has made statements to investigators. However, investigations are ongoing, and no court has found him guilty of any offence.
The police added that efforts are continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
