The Kano State Government has alleged that former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is indirectly advancing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s chances of securing a second term in 2027.
The allegation was made on Wednesday by the Director-General of Media and Publicity at the Kano Government House, Sunusi Tofa, during an appearance on Arise News.
According to Tofa, political activities and alliances taking shape ahead of the 2027 elections indicate that some opposition figures are engaging in moves that could ultimately benefit the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is indirectly or strategically working towards President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid,” Tofa said.
“There are political activities and strategic engagements already taking place ahead of 2027, and many of them will eventually favour President Tinubu.”
Tofa also claimed that Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had approached Tinubu regarding a possible defection to the APC with Kwankwaso’s approval.
“The governor approached President Tinubu over plans to defect to the APC with Kwankwaso’s consent,” he alleged, adding that the move also had the backing of former Kano deputy governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.
The government spokesperson further commented on the political prospects of Peter Obi in Kano, saying the state’s political culture may not favour him.
“Political acceptance in Kano is shaped by ideology, history and regional considerations,” he said.
Tofa also dismissed reports that about five million supporters attended a recent gathering at Kwankwaso’s residence in Kano, describing the figure as exaggerated.
“Even major public venues in Kano do not have such capacity. Kwankwaso’s residence cannot accommodate more than 2,000 people,” he said.
Attempts to get a response from Kwankwaso were unsuccessful as of the time this report was filed.
Kwankwaso remains one of the most influential politicians in northern Nigeria through the Kwankwasiyya movement, which played a major role in the electoral victory of Yusuf and the New Nigeria Peoples Party in Kano during the 2023 elections.
