Barrister Barakat Odunuga-Bakare has emerged winner of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for Surulere Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, defeating incumbent lawmaker Desmond Elliot in a wide-margin contest.
Odunuga-Bakare polled 11,385 votes to Elliot’s 270, according to results released from the various wards in the constituency. The exercise recorded strong participation from party members across Surulere.
The outcome reflects clear dominance across polling units, with Odunuga-Bakare maintaining a decisive lead in nearly all wards.
In Akinhanmi/Cole Ward, she secured 2,191 votes while Elliot recorded 82. In Yaba/Ojuelegba Ward, she finished with 980 votes against Elliot’s three.
At Gbaja Stadium Ward, Odunuga-Bakare polled 523 votes, while Elliot did not receive any vote in that ward.
Elliot’s strongest performance came from Shitta/Ogunlana Ward, where he scored 270 votes, compared to Odunuga-Bakare’s 169.
In other areas, the margin remained wide. At Owolewa Open Field, Off Randle Avenue, she polled 1,956 votes while Elliot got 10. In Iponri/Eric Moore Ward, she recorded 1,805 votes against his six.
Odunuga-Bakare is widely associated with support from Speaker of the House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila, a development that shaped political expectations ahead of the primary.
The primary was conducted under the platform of the All Progressives Congress and attracted significant turnout from party delegates and members across the constituency.
Elliot, who first entered the Lagos State House of Assembly in 2015 representing Surulere Constituency I, has served multiple terms before the outcome of this primary.
