The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has accused Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of attempting to maintain political influence in the state through indirect means following the emergence of his son, Mustapha Kwankwaso, as deputy governorship candidate of the NDC ahead of the 2027 elections.
The NDC recently presented Mustapha Kwankwaso as running mate to its governorship candidate, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo. Mustapha previously served as Commissioner for Youth and Sports under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf before resigning alongside other cabinet members after a political realignment involving the governor and the APC.
Reacting to the development, Kano APC Chairman Umar Haruna Doguwa said the party was not surprised by Mustapha’s nomination, alleging that it reflects a pattern of influence linked to Senator Kwankwaso’s political activities in the state.
Doguwa claimed that Kwankwaso has consistently explored ways to extend his influence beyond his tenure in public office, adding that the selection of his son on a major ticket raises further questions about that intention.
He further alleged that previous political maneuvers attributed to the former governor included efforts aimed at prolonging his hold on power beyond constitutional limits, describing the latest development as part of a broader strategy.
According to him, the APC does not view the nomination as a threat to its position in the state, insisting that the party remains focused and confident ahead of the 2027 elections.
Meanwhile, the Kwankwasiyya Movement has continued its political mobilization in Kano, stating its intention to regain control of the state’s leadership. Senator Kwankwaso has, in earlier remarks, criticized Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s political shift, describing it as a breach of trust within their political alignment.
