The Osun State Government has declared Wednesday, June 17, 2026, a public holiday to mark the Islamic New Year, Hijira 1448AH.

In a statement issued in Osogbo, the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Rasheed Aderibigbe, said the decision was in recognition of the beginning of the new Islamic calendar year.

The announcement conveyed greetings from the government to Muslim residents across the state, noting the significance of the occasion.

Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration urged residents to use the period to promote peaceful coexistence and avoid actions that could trigger division or unrest.

The statement also encouraged residents to take part in activities associated with the celebration in a manner that strengthens unity across communities in Osun State.

Hijira 1448AH begins on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, following the sighting of the Muharram crescent moon. The lunar year is expected to run until around June 5, 2027, on the Gregorian calendar.
