#AnambraDecides: “Vote Buying, Low Turnout Still a Problem,” Observers Lament After Anambra Election
International and local election observers have raised concerns over reports of widespread vote buying and low voter turnout during Saturday’s governorship election in Anambra State.
Reports from Yiaga Africa, the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) II, and other partner organisations revealed that voter participation was low in most polling units across the state’s 21 local government areas.
Addressing journalists in Awka, the Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, Samson Itodo, noted that both vote buying and low turnout remained persistent challenges in the state’s electoral process.
Asabe Ndahi of the Kukah Centre also expressed concern over logistical setbacks, particularly the late arrival of officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies in high-risk areas such as Nkwelle-Ezunaka, Ihiala, Ogbaru, and Nnewi South.
She further disclosed that incidents of vote buying and voter intimidation were recorded in several parts of the state.
