#AnambraDecides2025: Tinubu Presidency Mocks Peter Obi After Losing Polling Unit to APC

President Bola Tinubu’s aide, Bayo Onanuga, on Saturday mocked Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, for losing his polling unit to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the ongoing Anambra governorship election.

Onanuga, writing on his X handle, referred to Obi as “the pontificator” who could not deliver his own polling unit, posting: “The pontificator Peter Obi loses his polling unit to APC, his candidate beaten in Anambra election.”

At Polling Unit 019, Agulu Ward 11, Anaocha Local Government Area — where Obi cast his vote earlier in the day — the APC candidate Nicholas Ukachukwu secured 73 votes. Labour Party’s George Moghalu polled 57 votes, while the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) received 38 votes. The result was announced around 3:00 p.m.

The outcome has stirred political debate in Anambra, a state where Obi has maintained significant influence for years. In the 2023 presidential election, he had delivered a sweeping victory for the Labour Party, winning over 95 percent of the state’s votes and taking all 21 local government areas.

Political analysts suggest the latest result could point to shifting voter sentiment or a decline in the Labour Party’s dominance ahead of the 2027 general elections. Despite Obi’s active involvement in campaigning for his party’s candidate, the loss of his polling unit is being viewed as a symbolic setback for him in his home state.

Collation of results from other polling units across Anambra was still underway at the time of this report.
