Anambra Teacher Sentenced to 21 Years for Flogging Pupil to Death; Burial Held Amidst Tears

The body of Master Henry Chukwuemeka Okonkwo, a pupil from Landmark International School in Mgbakwu, Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, has been laid to rest in his hometown of Igbakwu, Ayamelum Local Government Area. The burial was a somber event, attended by grieving family and community members.

Henry tragically passed away in the Intensive Care Unit of a hospital in Awka after being beaten into a coma by his teacher, Mrs. Faith Nwoye. His death has sparked outrage and deep sorrow within the community.

At the funeral, the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, conveyed her heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Education family and the Anambra State Government. Represented by the Director of Schools in the Ministry of Education, Mrs. Ifeoma Onyeneke, Chuma-Udeh lamented the loss of a young, promising student in such a preventable manner.

In her address, Chuma-Udeh emphasized that Henry’s death might have been avoided if he had been enrolled in a government-approved school with qualified teachers. She reminded residents that Governor Chukwuma Soludo has criminalized the operation of illegal schools in Anambra State.

In a related development, Mrs. Faith Nwoye has been sentenced to 21 years imprisonment by a special court in Awka that handles Women and Children related matters. This sentencing aims to serve as a stern warning against such violent disciplinary measures in schools.

The Anambra State Government continues to urge parents to ensure their children are enrolled in certified institutions to prevent future tragedies.
