Aminu Gwarzo resigns as Kano deputy governor
Aminu Gwarzo has stepped down as deputy governor of Kano State.
His resignation was confirmed on Friday evening by Ibrahim Shuaibu, his chief press secretary, who spoke to reporters.
The development comes weeks after the Kano State House of Assembly began impeachment proceedings against him over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, breach of public trust, and financial wrongdoing.
On March 5, during a plenary session, the majority leader, Lawan Dala, formally read the notice of impeachment. Lawmakers accused Gwarzo, while serving as commissioner for local government, of participating in the diversion of funds meant for local government administration.
In February, the state assembly dismissed reports suggesting an impeachment move linked to claims that he had refused to join the All Progressives Congress.
Political tension in the state has been high since January, when Governor Abba Yusuf, members of his cabinet, and lawmakers left the New Nigeria People’s Party for the All Progressives Congress.
