JUST IN: El-Rufai Released from ICPC Custody After Weeks of Detention
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has released former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai after more than a month in custody.
El-Rufai had been held since February 19, 2026, following his arrest shortly after leaving the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where he underwent 48 hours of questioning.
The ICPC subsequently charged him with a 10-count indictment involving alleged conversion of public assets and money laundering. He was arraigned before a Federal High Court in Kaduna, which adjourned his bail application to March 31.
His release comes shortly after the death of his mother in Cairo, Egypt. Family sources indicate that the decision may be linked to preparations for her burial, with her remains expected to arrive in Nigeria on Saturday.
An associate of the former governor confirmed his release but declined to provide further details. His son, Bashir El-Rufai, also verified the development.
El-Rufai has consistently denied all allegations against him.
