Airstrikes Targeted Terrorists, Not Civilians,” Military Denies Sokoto Casualty Claims

The Nigerian military has refuted claims that recent airstrikes in the Silame Local Government Area (LGA) of Sokoto targeted civilians. According to military authorities, the operations were specifically aimed at the Lakurawa terrorist group.

On Wednesday, reports emerged alleging that airstrikes conducted by the air component of Operation Hadarin Daji mistakenly hit civilian populations in the Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities. These reports claimed that over 10 villagers were killed, and several others were injured.

In a statement, Abubakar Abdullahi, the joint media coordinator for the operation, emphasized that the strikes were directed at locations identified as associated with the Lakurawa group. He stated that all military actions are guided by intelligence and reconnaissance to ensure precision and avoid civilian harm.

“These reports have raised concerns; however, it is crucial to clarify that all military operations are conducted based on thorough intelligence and reconnaissance missions,” Abdullahi said. “This rigorous process is particularly important when targeting groups like the Lakurawa terrorist organisation, as it aims to ensure precision and protect civilian lives.”

He also warned of the potential for terrorist groups to use misinformation to undermine military efforts, urging caution regarding unverified claims.

Olusola Akinboyewa, spokesperson for the Nigerian Air Force, corroborated this, confirming that the airstrikes were based on credible intelligence from multiple sources and confirmatory aerial surveillance. He added that any reports of civilian harm would be thoroughly investigated, with updates provided in due course.
