Anambra: Police Arrest Suspect in Attempted Kidnapping, Recover N1.2 Million Ransom
The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended a 32-year-old man, Chukwuma Obi, in connection with an attempted kidnapping and extortion case. The suspect, a resident of Umuagu Village, Igboukwu, Aguata Local Government Area, was arrested by officers from the Anti-Cultism Squad in Enugu-Ukwu.
According to Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, Obi was accused of issuing threats of abduction while demanding a ransom of N1.2 million. The victim, who reported the incident, revealed receiving a message from someone claiming to be affiliated with the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The suspect allegedly threatened to kidnap the victim if the money was not deposited into a specified account.
During police interrogation, Obi reportedly confessed to the crime and is cooperating with investigators to identify other members of the criminal group. Authorities believe this arrest could lead to further breakthroughs in dismantling the network behind such activities.
This case echoes a similar incident last month, where a couple was arrested for extortion and sending threatening messages under the guise of planning kidnappings. The duo admitted to destroying SIM cards used in their operations to evade detection.
Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, reaffirmed the Command’s dedication to resolving such cases and ensuring justice. He emphasized the importance of these efforts in curbing criminal activities and safeguarding public safety.
The Anambra State Police Command has urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through its emergency contact lines.
