Abure’s Financial Rascality: NLC Orders Nationwide Picketing of Labour Party Offices

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has mandated its members nationwide to picket all Labour Party offices. This directive comes amidst a storm of controversy surrounding the party’s National Chairman, Mr. Julius Abure, accused of financial mismanagement and showing disdain towards the NLC leadership.

A circular dated March 19, 2024, addressed to the chairpersons of all NLC State Councils/Political Commissions, outlined the decision to picket all Labour Party offices across the country. The circular, titled “Picketing All Labour Party Offices Nationwide,” was jointly signed by Comrade Titus Amba and Comrade Chris Uyot, Chairperson and Secretary of the NLC Political Commission, respectively.

The picketing action is a response to what the NLC terms as the unilateral decision of Julius Abure to convene a National Convention of the Labour Party, amidst allegations of financial misconduct and a perceived disregard for the NLC’s authority.

The circular states, “Given the intransigence of the National Chairman of the Labour Party to unilaterally hold a National Convention of the Labour Party, financial rascality, and contempt for the leadership of the NLC, the NLC State Councils and State Political Committees should mobilize workers to picket all the State Secretariats of the Labour Party, scheduled for Wednesday, 20th March 2024.”

Furthermore, the NLC calls for a statewide mobilization of workers to participate in the upcoming national convention of the Labour Party. The directive also encourages collaboration with civil society groups, students, traders, and professionals to ensure the success of the picketing and mobilization efforts.

This latest development follows a vote of no confidence passed by the NLC leadership against Julius Abure on March 16, 2024, amidst corruption allegations. In response, the National Working Committee of the Labour Party called for the resignation of Joe Ajaero, National President of the NLC, accusing him of seeking to replace Julius Abure as the party’s National Chairman.
