JUST IN: 5 Policemen, 3 Soldiers Killed in Zamfara Ambush; Military Reinforces, Neutralizes Several Terrorists
In Zamfara State, eight security personnel, including five policemen and three soldiers, were killed on Thursday morning during an ambush by terrorists. The attack occurred while the security forces were escorting workers from Setraco Nigeria Limited, a construction company, in the Tsafe Local Government Area.
According to a military source who spoke with SaharaReporters, the ambush caught the security team off guard as they were escorting the construction workers. The terrorists opened fire, leading to the death of the eight personnel.
The source also revealed that a swift response from the Nigerian Army helped prevent further casualties. A reinforcement team arrived at the scene, engaging in a fierce gunfight with the attackers, killing several terrorists. However, some of the terrorists managed to escape, taking with them weapons stolen from the fallen security officers.
“We responded quickly to reinforce the team, and we were able to neutralize many of the bandits. The police have since evacuated the bodies of both the personnel and the terrorists killed in the confrontation,” the source said.
The incident has cast a spotlight on the growing insecurity in Zamfara, with terrorists becoming more emboldened. Just prior to this ambush, another group of terrorists blocked the Gusau-Funtua highway in the state, abducting an unspecified number of travelers. Police Spokesperson Yezid Abubakar confirmed the kidnapping and stated that security forces had been deployed to the scene, though details on the number of abductees remain unclear.
