How Security Agencies Arrested Top IPOB Commander, Neutralized Boko Haram Fighters, and Intercepted Stolen Crude
In a major crackdown on insurgent activities, Nigerian security forces, including the Department of State Services (DSS), the Army, and the Nigerian Air Force, have successfully apprehended a top commander of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Ebonyi State and neutralized multiple Boko Haram terrorists in Niger State. Details of the operations emerged from Abuja on Thursday.
According to a reliable source within the security apparatus, the high-profile IPOB commander was arrested following intelligence reports linking him to the recruitment of mercenaries for planned attacks in Ebonyi and other southeastern states. The arrest, which took place on September 9, 2024, also led to the recovery of 600 rounds of 5.56 mm ammunition and other dangerous weapons. However, the identity of the commander remains undisclosed as investigations are ongoing.
“Intelligence confirmed his active involvement in IPOB activities and recruitment of fighters in preparation for future attacks. His arrest marks a significant blow to IPOB’s operations in the region,” said the source.
In a separate joint operation, security forces targeted Boko Haram terrorists and armed bandits responsible for recent attacks on Bassa-Kukoki village in Niger State’s Allawa district. Many terrorists were killed in the ensuing battle, though three civilians lost their lives to fleeing bandits. Notably, no security personnel were harmed during the operation.
Meanwhile, operatives of the DSS in Delta State also intercepted a barge carrying 37,000 liters of stolen crude oil. Five individuals connected to the theft were apprehended and are currently under investigation.
The DSS emphasized its commitment to combating threats to national security in collaboration with other agencies, vowing to prevent terrorist and mercenary activities from destabilizing the country.
