30 Buried Alive in Mining Disaster Along Adamawa-Taraba Border, Officials Report

Approximately 30 people have reportedly lost their lives after being buried alive in a mining pit collapse on the border between Adamawa and Taraba states. The tragedy unfolded at an illegal mining site situated between Gashaka Local Government Area (LGA) in Taraba State and Toungo LGA in Adamawa State.

Initial reports indicated that 22 miners were feared dead when news of the collapse broke on Thursday, November 7. However, a more recent update from Umar Adamu, the Information Officer for Toungo LGA, has confirmed that the actual death toll is closer to 30 individuals. According to Adamu, the miners were trapped deep within the pit, making any retrieval efforts impossible.

Despite attempts to recover the bodies, none of the victims could be brought to the surface. Local community members, most of whom are Muslims, held prayers at the collapsed site in remembrance of those lost, believing the deceased were likely fellow Muslims.
