Photos: Fire Destroys St. Mary’s Catholic Cathedral in Wukari
A major fire on the night of Wednesday, March 4, 2025, completely destroyed St. Mary’s Catholic Cathedral in Wukari, Taraba State.
Fr. John Laikei, Director of Communications for the Catholic Diocese of Wukari, said the fire broke out shortly after electricity was restored in the area. He described the loss as a “major setback” for the diocese, noting that parishioners remain in shock.
“The exact cause of the fire has not been confirmed. It coincided with the restoration of electricity, and authorities are yet to assess the full extent of the damage,” Fr. Laikei said.
Reports indicate that the lack of functional fire service vehicles in Wukari contributed to the scale of the destruction, leaving church members unable to contain the blaze.
This incident follows a similar fire less than a month ago that destroyed the Wukari Local Government Secretariat, raising concerns about fire preparedness in the town.
