“All Shrines and Deities in Amasiri Must Be Destroyed” — Nwifuru Orders After Killings
Governor Francis Nwifuru has ordered the destruction of all shrines and deities in Amasiri clan following killings linked to the community in Ebonyi State.
The directive was issued after an expanded security council meeting at the Old Government House in Abakaliki. The meeting was attended by heads of security agencies, traditional rulers, members of the elders’ council, and stakeholders from Okporojo, Amasiri, Akpoha and Afikpo communities.
According to a statement released by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor, community leaders have been directed to identify the locations of the shrines so they can be destroyed by security agencies.
“The council has also directed that all the shrines and deities in Amasiri clan be destroyed, and stakeholders of the area are under obligation to show the state government and security agencies the locations of the shrines,” Nwifuru said.
The governor also announced the formation of a 19-member committee to demarcate the disputed boundary between Okporojo and Amasiri communities. The move follows an agreement already signed by both parties to formally define their boundary.
The committee will be chaired by the State Commissioner for Border and Conflict Resolution, Prof. Paul Nwobashi. Other members include the Surveyor-General of the state, the Commissioners for Lands and Survey and for Primary and Secondary Education, as well as chairmen of the Traditional Rulers’ Council across the 13 local government areas.
Dr. Boniface Chima is also a member, while Chief Sunday Oyibe will serve as secretary.
Nwifuru said the boundary demarcation had become necessary following the agreement reached by the two communities.
The security council also resolved that the curfew imposed on Amasiri community will remain in force until the severed heads of victims from the Okporojo killings are recovered.
