23-Year-Old Man Stabs Mother to Death Over Early Morning Smoking Dispute
A 23-year-old man named Samson was arrested for allegedly stabbing his mother to death after she objected to his smoking at 5 a.m. The arrest was confirmed by the spokesman for the Delta State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, to journalists on Wednesday.
The suspect, identified as Samson, was detained by the Nigeria Police Force following the incident in Obiaruku, Delta State. A video posted on social media platform X by a user named Ose captured Samson with the knife reportedly used in the attack. The video also showed the body of the deceased lying in a pool of blood.
Ose captioned the video, “Tragedy strikes in Obiaruku, Delta State as a young man suspected to be mentally unstable allegedly stabs his mom to death. Police apprehend the suspect.”
Reports indicate that Samson had been relocated to Asaba, the capital of Delta State, to learn a trade after completing secondary school. However, he was brought back to Obiaruku after falling in with a group of young men who introduced him to drugs, adversely affecting his mental health. His mother had taken him to a traditional mental health facility for treatment upon his return.
An eyewitness, who requested anonymity, provided further details about the family, who reside on Jehovah Street, Obiedike Obiaruku, near their shop. The witness recounted the events leading up to the incident, stating, “The mother, who is in her 50s, confronted Samson at around 5 a.m. when she saw him smoking. She told him it was too early to be smoking, and possibly shouted at him. Samson then went inside, brought out a knife, and stabbed his mother. It was his elder brother, a sickle cell patient, who raised the alarm, causing people to enter the compound as the gate was still locked.”
The community remains in mourning as the investigation continues.
