20-Year-Old Man Steals Maize, Stabs Owner to Death; Arrested by Police

Police in Adamawa State have detained a 20-year-old man, Abubakar Abdu, in connection with the fatal stabbing of Azumi Abubakar, a 30-year-old woman from Gengle village, Mayo-Belwa Local Government Area. The arrest followed a tragic incident on November 7, 2024, when Abdu allegedly attempted to steal maize from Azumi’s store.

According to police sources, the incident occurred in the early hours around 3 a.m. Abdu reportedly broke into Azumi’s storage facility to steal maize, driven by claims of hunger. When Azumi caught him in the act, Abdu, allegedly realizing he had been recognized, responded by attacking her, inflicting fatal knife wounds before fleeing the scene.

The incident was reported to the police by Azumi’s husband. SP Suleiman Nguroje, spokesperson for the Adamawa State Police Command, confirmed the arrest, stating that the case is being treated as culpable homicide. “On November 10, our officers apprehended Abubakar Abdu following the report of Azumi’s death,” he said, emphasizing the Command’s commitment to addressing violent crime in the state.

Nguroje assured that once the investigation is completed, Abdu will face court proceedings.
