US Man Commits Suicide After Killing Family Members Following Trump Election Victory
Duluth, Minnesota – Last Thursday, 46-year-old Anthony Nephew took the lives of his wife, ex-partner, two children, and ultimately himself in a murder-suicide reportedly linked to distress over the recent U.S. presidential election outcome.
According to Duluth authorities, Nephew’s actions came just days after the November 5 election, in which Donald Trump was re-elected as President. Police reports reveal a history of mental health struggles and political frustration for the Minnesota father, who had openly shared concerns about the political climate and his personal distress on social media.
The bodies of Nephew’s ex-partner, Erin Abramson (47), and their 15-year-old son, Jacob Nephew, were discovered by police at her residence on Thursday. Soon after, authorities identified Nephew as a suspect and found his wife, Kathryn Nephew (45), and their 7-year-old son, Oliver Nephew, deceased at their nearby family home. All five individuals appeared to have died from gunshot wounds.
Duluth Police Chief Mike Ceynowa stated on Friday that Nephew had shown signs of “a pattern of mental health issues.” On his Facebook account, he had shared various anti-Trump and left-wing posts, along with messages expressing distress about societal and political issues. In one notable post from July, he wrote about his fear of religious extremism and expressed concerns over what he described as an increasingly hostile political climate.
“My mental health and the world can no longer peacefully coexist,” he wrote. “I am terrified of religious zealots inflicting their misguided beliefs on me and my family.”
Nephew also cited issues within the U.S. political system, referring to a perceived lack of viable candidates and expressing dissatisfaction with the binary choice between political parties. His posts included critiques of the Republican Party’s stance on women’s rights, drawing comparisons to “The Handmaid’s Tale” and suggesting a dystopian future for the country.
In a separate 2021 op-ed for the Duluth News Tribune, Nephew addressed his mental health struggles, criticizing what he saw as the societal neglect of mental health care. He described the stigma surrounding mental health issues and warned of the dangers untreated mental illness could pose to individuals and their families.
While Duluth police continue to investigate, they have yet to determine a clear motive for the shootings. Police emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the community of Duluth, a city of nearly 90,000 people situated about 135 miles north of Minneapolis.
