14 Wedding Guests Drown After Boat Capsizes in Kebbi
At least 14 people lost their lives when a boat carrying wedding guests overturned in Yauri Local Government Area, Kebbi State.
The incident happened on Friday, February 13, 2026, in Gumbi village, Gumbi Ward, shortly after guests had accompanied a bride to her husband’s home in Gwarzo village, Ngaski LGA, according to Channels TV. The boat, carrying more than 100 passengers, capsized as the celebrants were returning home.
Authorities confirmed that 14 people — including 13 women and one child — drowned in the accident.
Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris attended the funeral prayers on Saturday, expressing condolences to the victims’ families, local authorities, and the people of Yauri. Represented by Yauri Local Government Chairman Abubakar Shu’aibu, the governor urged the community to find solace in their faith.
He said, “I appeal to you to accept this in good faith, bearing in mind that nothing happens without the knowledge of our Creator. God does what He wants at the time He wants, and nobody has the right to question Him.”
The governor also prayed for forgiveness for the deceased and for them to be granted Jannatul Firdaus. All victims have been buried according to Islamic rites.
